Friday, December 12, 2003 biked from my house (it's near OCC) all the way to Barnes and Nobles at Metro Pointe. man, that route ain't shit compared to what i got ot do every day from the apartment to class and back again at ucla. it's nice living on a mesa where everything is flat. there was one uphill climb (on fairview going over the 405 freeway) but, again, that shit is nothing compared to west wood hills. we've got one hill over here with a 12:1 grade (how do i know? it says on the floor "caution: slope exceeds 12:1"). anyways... i'm preparing myself for snowboarding on saturday. making sure most of my body is worked out before i hit those slopes. i've even started to pick up my breaking. i've got two windmills down... still need to build up my upper body strength to carry on an infinite amount. damn my chest hurts. i'm glad the chest pains are now more painfull than the heartache. i can't say that i'm totally over it but i'm doing a whole lot better. thanks all for your support and being there for me. couldn't have done it without you guys. you're the best. it's nice to know i have such great friends that'll be there for me. *tear. anyways... i'll always be there for you guys... that is, unless jessica alba tells me not to. you know how it is. technical info rotary engine (or wankel): the infamous engine with no pistons. it's not a V- or a straight- anything. developed and made by dr. felix wankel. it's a rotary! found on the beautiful and sexy RX-7s of the past, the brand new RX-8, and on the old Datsun 510. this thing is a beast. it'll rev to god-knows-what speeds without breaking a sweat. bolt on a couple of turbos (or one big turbo for you insane ass mother f@#%ers) and you've got torque, power, and revs. that's one deadly combination. cons the engine is not perfect though (come on, it's been in only a handful of production cars and who'll be daring enough to stray away from the tried and true piston engine). rotaries of the past have their exhaust ports on the front-back (for lack of a better word) walls of the housing rather than the side walls and cause overlap between the opening of the intake and exhaust. the most recent rotary engine, the renesis, found on the RX-8 has solved that problem and has put the exhaust port on the side wall. perfect! rotaries are also prone to overheating and pinging because of the large surface area of the combustion chamber (more surface area = more places for heat to be absorbed). that's why the new renesis engine doesn't have turbos (turbos create insane amounts of heat). this overheating causes the wearing down of or a complete blow out of the apex seals. the apex seals are like piston rings but not (apex seals separate the three combustion chambers while piston rings separate the combustion chamber from the... oil chamber (?). i dunno what that part of the engine is called... does anyone?). blow an apex seal and it's exactly like blowing a piston ring: you've got to tear down the whole engine to fix that thing. luckily, there are so few moving parts in a rotary that it's not all that bad. pros the engine is so lightweight. there are so few parts involved: just the rotary and the housing. that's it! there's also only 2 moving parts in the whole engine: the rotary and the output shaft. you don't have any timing belts, camshafts, valves, crankshafts, or connecting rods to worry about like you do in a piston engine. you break a timing belt in a piston engine and you gotta worry about replacing 16 (for your honda and civic owners out there) up to 48 (for you god damned exotic car owners... or MB alpha-600 owners) valves. boost or nitrous your piston engine car too long and you've got to worry about breaking everything. parts may even fly out and poke wholes through your big block of iron or aluminum. none of these problems in a rotary, boost or nitrous your RX-7 and you've just got apex seals to replace (granted... this happens many many times in the lifetime of a rotary engine... but it's simpler and easier to fix than in a stupid piston engine). less moving parts = smooth. that helps in the high revving department. the compression ratio is also low, contributing again to the high revving features of the engine. in a piston engine you've got 4 up to 12 pistons in the engine. in a rotary there are either 1, 2, or 3 rotaries. no valves = flatter torque curve. you don't have to worry about valve timing or lift in a rotary (awww... that means no VTEC... stop crying you fucking honda lovers... it's a good thing). 13B: 2 rotary engine twin turbo found in all North American RX-7s 20B: 3 rotary engine twin turbo found only in japan. imported to make some insane RX-7s. c l i f f l o v e's thoughts at 7:29:00 AM
